Sci-fi/Fairy Tale ideas

Genre 3 – Sci-fi/Fairy Tale ideas:

SciI want to get across a really huge divide of poor and rich, lavish and destitute. I want to depict these slums as both hyper technical, maybe with a steam punk twist, mixed with bright and colourful magic. A shantytown filled with Tokyo style colours and ads for various services and things. The inner city will be stark and white, the design of the city focused on symmetry and almost surreal marble structures. The colour in the inner city comes from almost hidden lush gardens and the bright rich fabrics the citizens wear, though they’re deep, expensive colours, not hyper bright. I think traditional Japanese silk patterns would lend themselves well to these types of clothes. I don’t want to do any ‘monsters’ per say in this game, they’re all people, from ogres to dryads and fairies and spirits and demons and dragons to red caps and other goblins. I want a BIG variety in people. I know if this was a real game that would present a big problem with how many different base characters would be needed and animation would be hell, but hey, I’m just the concept artist.

Horror/Survival Ideas

Genre 2 – Horror/Survival ideas:

Typical horror survival game I suppose, the difference being the inclusion of ‘school yard’ games, thought it might be hard to program all the individual mechanics for each different game. But wouldn’t it be so cool to play tag with a live grenade or jump ‘rope’ with razor wire? It would not be cool in real life. I’m also thinking hide and seek, more variations of tag and possibly ‘what’s the time Mr Wolf’ with an actual huge mutated wolf, big slobbering fangs, skin and fur sloughing off a rotting frame. I’d like the town to be a de-saturated version of 50s middle class America, but maybe on a hidden island or something. I think it would be great if the protagonist was a crazy conspiracy theorist, and you can dress him/her in all sorts of wacky clothes, like playing dress up. Though I want the horror threat to be very real over all these overtones of silliness. Human and animal experimentation, mutations, grown humans gone wrong. The place was just shut down, everything like it was except with the thick layer of dust coating every inch of the island.  I’d like to make a few models of 50s cars. I also want some paintings that show the odd interaction between the player and the mutants left, it’s not friendly, they’re always plotting, it’s like being mocked in a sweet way, daggers aimed straight at your back. They get you to play their ‘games’ just wanting to see what happens, like playing with a toy.

Cartoon/Fantasy Ideas

Genre 1 – Cartoon/Fantasy ideas:

For the game design aspect I think possibly some element of platforms, but definitely inclusion of puzzles. I want to convey a bright coloured world with huge colossal monsters, sort of like the feeling of being a small child and facing something much bigger than you. Architecture wise I’d like to include designs that hark back to gothic castles, towering Greek coliseums, intricate Japanese temples as well as small villages made from timber. Maybe some villages could be high up in the trees, decorated with fruits and lanterns or down in caves lit by those bioluminescent spores and fungi. I would like the clothing style to be interesting and intricate but not too difficult to model, it needs to be relatively simple but different. I’m not sure about my current designs yet; I’m not too keen on them. It might be interesting to look into traditional African tribal wear for something a little different.  Need to look more at different games for monster/creature ideas, though I adore the theme in Grandia 2 of different body parts, I’d like a theme.

Biro sketch of possible hairstyle for Fantasy/Cartoon Protagonist.

Just a bit of a biro sketch because I love drawing hair in biro. I was thinking a simplified version of this would be good for protag from Game 1.

Painting of Sci-Fi/Fairy Tale protagonist with possible hair styles.

I think I like the middle one best as the latter is just TOO typical fantasy. It needs to be a little bit different in order to maintain it's presence as a sci-fi world. Orange stands out against her grey/blue skin. I fixed the jaw after the first image, it was quite uneven.

This is my final piece when working with the images above. I shifted the colours in this significantly to give a more alien feel to an elf like character. I did a tutorial so I could make realistic hair and though it's not quite as good as I hoped I hope that it gives an interesting effect. I really liked working with this colour palette and I'd like to work on a full body image of this character.

Quick attempt at environment for Fantasy/Cartoon genre.

I really need some help with this, I like how the clouds turned out but I'm going to have to keep practicing with environments.

Creature/Monster ideas for Cartoon/Fantasy Genre

Some creature/monster ideas. The first picture is supposed to be a huge werewolf like creature with a mask on, not sure if that came through. Also an ice lady, not finished at all, but I think I quite like it looking so rough.

Protagonist Sketches for Science-Fiction/Fairy Tale Genre

First is brio and the second is VERY fast sketch in photoshop. She looks a lot more vicious in the first sketch and I somehow glazed over that in photoshop. I do want her looking a little fearsome. I was thinking that the officers in her special forces group would go through very Spartan like training, being kicked out into the wild. The players could experience this as an intro chapter, getting to grips with controls and deciding their starting stats which could be attributes from the creature they face down. Heavies like bears and wolves, the former being pure brute strength and the latter being a bit speedier but still deadly. Middle could be like foxes and rabbits, fast and faster. And the slower but magic creatures could be a dear and an owl. Or at least something like that. Each layer will still be able to use magic (I need to do a big explanation on my ideas of that), just apply it in different ways.

Turn around/Sketch for Fantasy/Cartoon Protagonist

A quick sketch for protag from Game 1 doing a turn around. I definitely do not like the three heads ratio, I think five or six would be much better. I'm also not sure on how round her face is here, I think I'll try and make it more square in future.

Photoshop sketches of Protagonist for Fantasy/Cartoon Genre

Some bunny-eared protag drawings. I really like the yellow cape, not sure whether to go bright or dial it back a bit. I also really like the hair colour in the first drawing, however the face went into a weird semi-realistic thing that I want to avoid in the future with this genre.

King/Queen/Protagonist sketches for Fantasy/Cartoon Genre

Some other characters with protag to show size. I definitely need to work on the clothes. But that's something I'll get to later when I've worked out basic features.

Protagonist sketches for Fantasy/Cartoon Genre

Another go at the Protag from Game 1. I prefer the fawn look. I don't think I've quite captured the attitude I wanted her to convey, as I think I did better with that in the previous picture. I don't really like the tail and that hair is going to be reasonably difficult to model, I'll probably have to go shorter.

First Drawing of Protagonist for Fantasy/Cartoon Genre

My first sketch and idea for a protagonist for Game 1. I'm not sure about the rabbit ears or the gauntlet, I think I'll try something else. I do like the cape and the oversized belt.
